Cold Steppe is a service-disabled veteran-owned startup building its first manufacturing plant to produce biochar from waste rice hulls from local farmers. Biochar is added to soil to increase the soil’s nutrient and water retention as well as crop yields. Strongly supported by local officials, area farmers and the USDA, the project is located in a high-poverty rural county.
